Science on Stage 1 Report

Ireland takes a prize

The Irish Science on Stage Delegation was awarded an EIROforum Science Teaching Award for their outstanding presentation of "Teaching Science as a Process" at the European Science Teaching Festival in CERN, Geneva from 21-25 November 2005. The Eiroforum award was given in recognition of "teaching excellence, inspiration and motivation of young people in a contribution to the Science on Stage festival". The award included a visit by the delegation hosted by EFDA/JET in Culham, UK.

Award   Eilish McLoughlin is presented with the Eiroforum Science Teaching award by Rolf Landua, Head of Education at CERN.

Science on Stage 1 involved national activities in 29 participating countries and brought together around 500 science educators, in order to identify the most exceptional teaching projects and most motivating individuals in European science education. The festival was the final event of a two-year-long programme of events that took place in virtually every European country and from which delegates had been selected for their outstanding projects promoting science.

Performances and workshops

The topics for each day of the SOS 1 festival, around which presentations, demonstrations and workshops were themed, were: Einstein Day; Sustainability Day (e.g. environment, climatology, oceanography, energy); Space and Astronomy Day; Life Sciences Day (e.g. health, biotechnology, genetics); Science and Technology in Society Day. "At the festival, teachers have the chance to view things from a new perspective, to be entertained and enchanted by science", says Rolf Landua, Head of Education at CERN and Chairman of the event. "As well as taking to the stage, they set up stalls in fair-like surroundings to share their most successful teaching tricks."

The complete programme for the festival can be found from: http://www.esa.int/SPECIALS/Science_on_Stage/.
